New Wave Waterbed
# 4078
A real waterbed that converts into a real working keyboard.

Known Variations Comments and Fun Facts
  • There is a variant of this playset.
  • What a great '80's thing for Jem to have
  • Compare New Wave Waterbed prototype photos, box art, cartoon form, comic book form and many other incarnations.
  • The Jem doll box artist (Sharon Knettel) indicated that she did artwork for this toy, but apparently it was never used.
  • The back box always says what is contained with the doll.  The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves stated came with the playset;
Contains; headboard/keyboard, keyboard lid, 2 bed frame pieces, vinyl water mattress, bed cover, pillow, seat, 2 drawers/speakers, table, 2-piece telephone, screw, battery pad, battery compartment cover, 8 "key-coded" music sheets with JEM songs, batteries, label sheet and instructions.

headboard/keyboard; (shown without battery cover).  It does work!
    keyboard lid (backside shown)
2 bed frame pieces (piece 1)
2 bed frame pieces (piece 2)
vinyl water mattress; It's obviously long enough to fit a Jem doll on it.  It's made of dark pink vinyl on the bottom and clear pink vinyl on the top.
bed cover; White crisp cotton with random paint-splashes design on it, ribbed on edges with mauve.  Matches pillow.
  • Looks like Banee's shirt in the prototype photos (the produced Banee shirt was pink with the same design though).
  • pillow; White crisp cotton with random paint-splashes design on it, ribbed on edges with mauve.  Matches bed cover.
seat;  It is shown here without the large JEM decal that is usually on it.
    2 drawers/speakers (shown without label)
table; the peg goes into a small hole on the side of the bed.
    2-piece telephone
battery pad: These are some small foam stickers that you put between the batteries and the battery compartment cover.

There is a variant of this playset.  The French version (it's assumed, it came in a box only French text, from France) comes with an extra cardboard piece called the keyboard support that fits between the keyboard and the floor for more stability.  It is also noted in the instructions sheet (the instructions have French as well as I think Dutch text).
  • Thanks to Laura (Badgerprincess) for this information and photograph.
  • Canadian Playset:
  • Box
  • MTV offer (Canadian).
  • Poster- folded second year catalogue: French on one side, English on the other.
  • A Moondreamers "Plush Stumbles" mail-in offer.
  • Jaze's New Wave Waterbed came with a pecular poster- the typical first year Jem catalogue poster, but the Rockin' Roadster photo is replaced by a Glitter 'N Gold one. (only the affected portion of the poster is shown in this photo).  The box and poster are in English with "1987 Hasbro Industries (U.K.) Ltd. Wokingham, Berkshire" while the instructions are in Italian "1987 MB Italy S.R.L. under Berne & Universal Copyright Convention." - making it a strange UK-Italian combination product.
  • This page was compiled with my NRFB Canadian  issued playset as the source. For more information on boxes, and the stuff included in them, please go to Jem Ephemera.
