Rockin' Romance Jem
Rockin' Romance Jem is probably the best known 'unproduced' Jem doll.  It is unknown how many of these dolls exist at this point in time; Ric is the only collector out there who has let it be known, as far as I know!  I've heard of a few others but I have not tried to contact them, or publish their names out of respect to their privacy.
This is a screen capture of Jem wearing the Rockin' Romance dress on the cartoon.  She wore it through many of the Stingers episodes, most specifically through most of "Riot's Hope."
A teensy-weensy little photo, showing the really big side pony tail that apparently got nixed.  This was donated by someone who worked on the Jem cartoon, who wishes to remain anonymous.  I hate saying "trust me, it's real"... but... well.  "Trust me, it's real!"
Rockin' Romance Jem, as she appeared in the 1988 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair Catalogue, as well as the 1988 Hasbro France catalogue.  She doesn't differ terribly from RRC's doll- some things I notice are the ponytail, the necklace looks matte in this photo, and the dress overall appears a bit darker.

The text reads: "JEM's ready for a rockin' romance, and she has the most outrageous hair ever!  Fully poseable, 12 1/2" doll comes with bustle dress, hair tie, tights, pumps, necklace, earrings, two bracelets, hair pick, microphone and a picture of Rio!"

Text from the Hasbro France catalogue translates to:

"Rocking Romance" (yep, with a "g")
A thinner face, more pretty, a new make up, and long blond hair, with pink. Fully articulated. Rocking Romance Jem is sold with earrings, bracelets, a picture of Rio, comb, shoes, microphone, and a wonderful night dress."

Another small picture of a boxed Rockin' Romance Jem from the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Hasbro catalogue. Difficult to tell if she has the side pony tail or not.  Otherwise it looks a lot like RRC's doll.
RRC's beautiful and extremely rare Rockin' Romance Jem!  She was found in auction box lot in 1999, in Pawtucket Rhode Island (Hasbro's headquarters), and later sold to RRC on eBay.  It appears to be a pre-production sample, or possibly a prototype.  She in with the box (back pictured below), packed up just like a doll you'd find in a store.  Here's a photo of her unique hair!

There are rumours that a small edition of this doll was made... What may have happened to them is still a mystery.  One of the theories is that they ended up in France (The 1988 Hasbro France catalogue shows Rocking Romance Jem, as well as some other unproduced Jem things.)  It's possible there is a warehouse with a crate full of these babies out there.  Or maybe it's just the stuff of legend! ^_^

The back of the box.  I don't think it's just me... but the face looks a lot more like Rock N' Curl Jem here- wider mouth, the eyebrow paint, etc.  Hmm.  Again, the dress appears darker than how it looks on RRC's doll.
Another photo of Jem (presumably Rockin' Romance, though going by the hair -which doesn't look crimped- it could be American Beauty Jem) from the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Hasbro catalogue.  Again, notice the wider mouth, paler skin tone of this doll.
Yet another... This one has crimpy hair so I think it's safe to call her Rockin' Romance Jem.  Modelling some fashions that were never produced, in the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Hasbro catalogue. Wider mouth... more like the doll on the back of RRC's box, than the doll that came in it, in my opinion.
The resemblance to Maxie is startling.  The tan on Jem (well, tan for her!) being the first clue, but then look at the similarities of the mouth, the eye make up...  Maxie even swiped Jem's Rockin' Romance necklace for this version (Prom Perfect Maxie).  The earrings are similar in concept but aren't the same, some Maxie Dance N' Romance fashions are shown with the same or similar ones though.  Even looking at Maxie's dress one is reminded of Rockin' Romance Jem. Interestingly, Prom Perfect Maxie was scented, and came with a perfumed medallion for a child to wear.  In the 1988 French Hasbro catalogue, "Hollywood Jem" (aka American Beauty Jem) was to have perfume included with the doll.

Waste Not, Want Not:

This is the "photo" of Rio from the Show Me the Way video madness playset.  It appears as though Rockin' Romance Jem was going to get these as an accessory
This is the necklace from Prom Perfect Maxie.  It's has an iridescent sheen.  There are also matte white necklaces like this that came in some Maxie accessory packs.
Here's the text from my old Rockin' Romance Jem page, for those who like a good story :)

This is the information I got directly from the seller of this rare doll!
"I got her in a box lot at an auction. I didn't know anything about her except that she had never been played with and was in mint condition. And she was in her original box which isn't in mint condition...My speculation is this: I live in Rhode Island, Hasbro (the manufacturer) is based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Hasbro stopped the Jem line and handed the dolls out to their employees because they weren't going to sell them. This is just my speculation on how this doll ended up in a box lot at an auction 12 years later. It is possible. "

This is the actual text from the auction:

"Featured in this auction is a Jem Rockin' Romance Doll. Rockin' Romance Jem has really long crimped blonde hair. She is wearing a pink bustle dress with a polka dot over skirt, a hair tie, tights, necklace, earrings, and two bracelts. Her pink pumps, hair pick, microphone, and a picture of Rio are still in the unopened plastic bag..."

And a few people have asked about the bottom line... Interested in this psuedo-Rock N' Curl Jem?  Well she set someone back over $2000 US!  So start saving your pennies kids!  (By the way, she is obviously NOT for sale! ^_^)
