Other Unproduced Dolls & Miscellaneous Oddities

I hope this section will be a work in progress as more of these dolls come to light.  Shown below are Jem dolls that appear to be works in progress, scrapped ideas, early versions of familar dolls.  I don't believe any of them were meant to be produced as they appear here, but who knows!

The following is a grouping of dolls that were purchased from a popular Barbie convention seller who bought them from the daughter of an ex-Hasbro employee, they currently live in three different collections.  I am told the dolls were played with so we have to take their outfits especially, with a grain of salt.

Plum dress Jem/Jerrica (1st Edition)

Variant on 1st edition Jem, she is completely blonde with no underpainting on the scalp, she has the battery plate in the back, like a normal Jem doll.  Her outfit is definitely different, a purple reminiscent of 2nd edition Aja's shirt, and a belt made with gold fabric and no sticker on it.  Her tights are "made of finely woven metallic gold stretch  material not at all like GnG with it's thick coarse plastic fibres.  They are more solid gold and the gold fibre is finer. Her shoes are more grape bubblegum in colour and have a scallop edge."

Originally I had thought this was an earlier version of the first edition Jem/Jerrica, but now I'm wondering if she's not a very early revision for a second year Jem doll.

From the collection of Michael Chambers, quoted passages are his words exactly.

Iridescent tinsel haired Video.

She is platinum blonde with iridescent tinsel hair, she was purchased wearing parts of Gettin' Down to Business.  Video, at one point in time was going to have silver hair, so this one has some sort of logic behind it.

Purple & Pink haired Jem

Looks to me like another early idea for a Jem doll for 1987.
This dress is a fashion from the Jem knock-off "Lace" by Creata.  Please visit Lace Celebrity Doll with Fashion & Fame for more information on those dolls. She wears tights that are similar to the Plum dress Jem (see above) "but less gold.  Her shoes are the same pinky purple colour as Rock N Curl's and she has two bracelets made in the same  coloured plastic similar to RnC's.  Also, her hair is curly, even curlier than the produced Rock N' Curl Jem!

Tangerine Roxy

Notice all the different colours in her hair!  Could be Roxy started out as a redhead.  She is wearing an alternately coloured version of Fire n' Ice - who knows if it was going to original to this doll or not! (more about the fashion in the fashion prototypes section).

Pizzazz with a new friendlier facial screening. She is wearing Outta My Way, but it is out of the ordinary. The belt buckle is hand cut as is the dress, it is most likely a handmade prototype.

Ballerina Jem.
As it's a second year doll that's been modified, I believe this one was more likely meant for 1988.  It has several hallmarks of the '88 fashions in progress (the row of sequins, the peplum/tiered skirt, the puffy sleeves).  Her fashion actually has a lot in common with both American Beauty and Rockin' Romance Jem.

Here is some information from the owner of this doll; "She's a prototype Jem doll that was acquired from a former Hasbro employee ... The doll is obviously a Rock 'n Curl Jem, but her hair is much shorter and better set than your typical RnC doll (she looks a bit frazzled right now from being in a box for 3 years!). The costume is obviously made for her, it just fits too well to be fake, also the shoes are hand cast from that resin those other shoes in the prototype section you have."

Looks a bit like a Maxie Ballerina doll to me.
Riot4Jem says the earrings are from Barbie and the Rockers (? anyone else know?)
In 2007 a pink prototype ballerina outfit for Jem was auctioned on eBay.  They seemed pretty set on making a ballerina Jem costume.

This selection of prototypes were contributed by an insider at Sunbow who wishes to remain anonymous (please trust me, they are authentic!), for use in the final Jem episodes.  The same person also had some prototype playset photos to share, as well as many proposed third year dolls. Sorry, some are much smaller than the others, that was the size they were sent as.
