Jem Fashions: Prototypes & Development
As many eBay watchers are aware, several prototype fashions were sold on eBay in 2006 and 2007.  I have not yet arranged permission to display photos of every fashion that was sold, but the following are a few examples of some of the ideas floating around at Hasbro in Jem's day.  I would love to feature more prototype fashions here, if you would like to see your prototype fashion displayed here, feel free to email me!
Unproduced Misfits "Balloon" Outfit.
Two of these have shown up recently (as of April 2006) on eBay, this being a revision of an earlier design that showed what appears to be lamé (the pink parts) and more voluminous lace parts.  The bracelets and shoes shown in this photo were added by the owner of the prototype :)

"the pants are made of the same fabric as the aja skirt, the top is made of pink lycra, something like tanb dress or gold rush top lycra top. the black netting top and bow are nothing like the yccm black fabric, it's dotted and the dots have a velvet feel in them. The top is realy well made, it's made of 3 pieces of fabric, the front is one and there is 2 pieces in back. It's closing by a black velcro closure, pants have elastics at waist and both end of legs."

Super big thanks to Tommy/ng.59 for sharing the photos and information about this piece!

Unproduced "Misfit-Fringe" Outfit.

"Black striped knit dress made of the SAME stiped fabric of there a melody playin' dress (in different colours - ed.). Fringes on sleeve and shoulder, Green lamé fabric at neck with a velvet appliqué. Velvet belt with black velcro closure in back and with another lamé green decoration on the side of the belt. Dress is closing with a black velcro closure."

According to the person who worked on this fashion, the first draft was a tiger print, not stripes. This example is the third made, the first with this striped pattern.

Unproduced Pink Ballerina costume

The following information courtesy of Tommy (the current owner of the fashion):
"it consist of a pink body suit with sheer shoulder ruffles with silver dots, matching wrap skirt with pink flower stick at waist, silver stocking similar to jem flash 'n sizzle, the outfit is tagged on bodysuit and skirt ''61071-03M'' on 1 side of both and ''On Stage Pink & Silver'' on the other side. A polariod picture came with it showing a jem/Jerrica wearring it with pink sandals (same as How you play the game darker version). So it was intent to be for the next line. As of my opinion, it would have been a fashion for Danse since it's look so ballerina-ish!"

Super big thanks to Tommy/ng.59 for sharing the photos and information about this piece!

I was given these drawings by a fan who contacted some people who worked at Hasbro, who kindly allowed me to share them here.  The signatures were removed by the person who sent them to me, so unfortunately we don't have any information on who did them and when.
Chinese-style Concept Drawing

Mardi-Gras Fashion concept drawing.  I believe his design can be credited to Carleigh Hoff, for more on her work, as well as a photo of the actual doll fashion prototype, please visit Totally Jem.  Fans of the cartoon may recognize this as Shana's Mardi Gras fashion from the cartoon!
Unproduced Flipside Fashion.  Wow!  Judging by the scalloped edges on the shoes, this fashion was likely planned for either 1987 or later.
Unproduced Flipside Fashion #2: Definitely has elements of Jem that we are familiar with - the belt looks like that from Rhythm and Flash, the pattern is reminiscent of It All Depends On The Mood, the necklace is typically Jem - yet still original and different, Jem had so little green in her wardrobe.
Also recently (2006/07) on eBay were several one-of-a-kind hand-made Matchin' Medley fashions.  It is unknown how many exist, but they were not put into production as far as anyone knows.  Here are some photos of the fashions from the 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalogue

Matching Medley Fashion Accessories

Features clothing bits either really close to, or recycled from Star Struck Guitar (the hairbow) and Outta My Way (the hairpiece).  Also has accessories in different colours from Jem-  Love Is Here (watch, in green), stretchy lace hairbows (like on the 2nd edition Holograms and Rock N' Curl Jem), ankle boots, sandals, scallop-edged shoes, and Rock N' Curl Jem style earrings and bracelets.  There are also some belts, purses and hair extensions not yet seen in Jem.
Matching Medley Fashions (Summer style clothing)
Matching Medley Fashions (jackets with purses, leotards with skirts, blouses with pants and more)
Matching Medley Fashions (with shoes: long skirts with bandeau tops, fring vests with pants and more)
The following are prototype shoes from Hasbro.  They were hand molded, and the straight edged ones have the seam line down the middle.  They are made of resin, not the usual plastic we are used to, as well as different colours.  Here are some from the Michael Chambers collection.
If you are interested in trying your hand at casting your own Jem shoes, why not check out Jemgirl's instructional page on the subject?
Flat grey scallops
Pea Green scallops
"I compared them to my "You Gotta Be Fast" which was the closest match and the YGBF pair is more of a true green and these are just like the colour of pea soup." (Tangerine Roxy, above, is wearing these)
Ivory Bone Straight Edged
Light Peach Straight Edge
Ultra Pale Light Lavender Straight Edged
Pepto Pink Scallops
Beige straight edge
White scallops.
