Maxie

In a tale as old as time itself, the spirited, talented, exotically-featured woman has been replaced by a thinner, younger, more  vapid version of herself.  Enter Maxie!
Deciding to cut their losses, Hasbro abandons Jem and by Toy Fair in February, 1988- Maxie is Hasbro's next shot at trying to dethrone Barbie; "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em"  being implicit in their marketing strategy.  Maxie is a teenage fashion model who goes to school and does other wholesome activities.  Ho Hum.  Even Barbie gave up on this concept in the early 1960's didn't she?  And they said that Jem's personality was too limiting!

Below is a listing of items that were meant to be Jem's, but ended up either belonging to Maxie, or the designs and fabrics are reused and "Maxie-fied"

Rob (Maxie's soccer playing dorky boyfriend, shown left) has a face mold that was apparently intended at first for Jem (see the "Craig Phillips" doll)  He thus looks about 25, much too old for a high school student and, he looks nothing like the cherubic youngster pictured in the box art.  But Rob didn't stop there.  He also borrowed Rio's white sneakers (from Glitter 'n Gold Rio).

-The Sunsplash Maxie dolls came with sunglasses in the shape of the smaller/triangular Jem glasses.  A cool (I'm sorry, but it is!) new feature was that they changed colour in the sun!  Also, check out those earrings.

It's possible that the "pearl" earrings that would have come with Rockin' Romance Jem available with two of the Maxie Dance and Romance fancy prom dress fashions.
There are white lace tights made of the "Like A Dream" Fabric for Maxie.  They have little lace "cuffs" sewn around the sock line
  • Thanks Thumper for this info!
  • This necklace from Prom Perfect Maxie looks like the same mold used for the ill-fated Rockin' Romance Jem doll.  These necklaces were also available in accessory packs.  I've also seen it in purple, orange, yellow, matte white and lavender
Some Maxie accessory packs came with vinyl purses that look like the ones shown in the 1988 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair catalogue (which weren't produced in Jem packaging)
The mold for the camera from Show Me the Way, as well as the watch from Love Is Here were recycled into the Maxie toyline as well.
  • Thanks Jake for showing me the way :)
  • Maxie's Mix 'n Match Gear
Maxie also had small accessory packs called "Mix N' Match Gear"; I believe there were at least 20 different packages, but only some had Jem-like items.  See below for some examples.  These aren't far from the ill-fated Matchin' Medley accessory packs that had been proposed for Jem in 1988.
