Kjem Rock-On Guitar
# 4095

It's a large green plastic "flying V" guitar (~_~) that opens up to become a radio studio (remember KJem from the cartoon?)  It's basically an amplifier.

Known Variations Comments and Fun Facts
  • Ironically,  it doesn't have a radio inside it, but you can plug a mini microphone (included) into it.
  • This is a good one to get NRFB as there are lots of tiny little pieces that easily get lost or broken.
  • Only came out in the second year (1987)
  • Compare KJem prototype photos, box art, cartoon form, comic book form and many other incarnations.
  • The back box always says what is contained with the playset. The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves stated came with the playset;
Contains; air-guitar with strap, working "Child-sized" microphone with jack, amplifier and speaker, 3 console base pieces, control panel, chair, stool, music stand, standing boom arm and base, console boom arm, 2 small microphone stands, 4 tuning knobs, 2 standing speakers, telephone receiver, 6 hand-held microphones, 4 record player arms, 8 records with jackets, 3 booth window pieces, KJEM sign, music sheet, label sheet and instructions.

"Child-sized" microphone with jack; (the jack is just a mini-plug, like walkman headphones.
amplifier and speaker; I think this is just the stuff inside KJem that makes the microphone work...
    3 console base pieces
control panel; Should have stickers on it, this is from my MIB playset.  The little records and record arms, mic, etc. attach to this.
    chair
stool; the green middle piece is smaller than the one to the chair above.
music stand, base is the same as the mic base below.
standing boom arm and base; The two small pieces have been enlarged a bit so you can see them better.
console boom arm; the two larger pieces are the same as the two smaller pieces from the Standing boom arm (above).  They fit into the control panel.
2 small microphone stands; triangular shaped.
4 tuning knobs;  These go on the guitar handle thing for when it's a guitar, not a playset.
2 standing speakers; Same design as the ones that came with the Star Stage, in green.
telephone receiver; doesn't really look like a phone on the other side either, pretty cheap looking.
6 hand-held microphones; The hand held mics fit into them and the control panel, as well as on the boom stands.
4 record player arms; very tiny and I'm sure often lost.  Shown about twice the size as they actually are.   They attach to the control panel.
8 records with jackets; the jackets are made of 'garbage bag' type plastic. There's a joke there somewhere I think....
3 booth window pieces; the third piece looks the same as the 1st piece but inverted.
KJEM sign; clips onto the side of the guitar when it's opened as KJEM.  It's about 6" long.
music sheet, cute. I haven't played it, I wonder if it's the Jem theme...
    Label Sheet
    Instructions (page 1, page 2)

Hasbro neglected to mention the following:

Two tall orange microphones and bases. (same as those from the Star Stage)
    The Battery cover.
    US Playset:
  • Box
  • Insert; turquoise
  • Poster- Rolled Glitter and Gold Illustrated poster with First year Jem catalogue poster on back.
  • other: there's a paper label on the volume knob saying how to reduce feedback from the amplifier.
  • Thanks to Isabelle for the scans of the instructions and label sheet!
  • This page was compiled with my NRFB US  issued playset as the source. For more information on boxes, and the stuff included in them, please go to Jem Ephemera.

There are various colour differences within the catalogue poster, US and France 1987 Hasbro catalogues.  I'll give more details in the future as it's really not terribly interesting to me!
