FRANCE
Please note: this page is almost entirely the contributions of Isabelle Ronc, (photos, text, translations!) except where noted, so thanks so much to her for helping me compile as much information on this section as I have, it would be about two sentences long if not for her.  Comme Jem, Isabelle est fantastique aussi, et merci beaucoup!

Hasbro's Toyline  France must have been a big market for Jem, as they got nearly all that Hasbro sold in the US.  Of course, in Europe things are imported and exported across the borders continuously so it's difficult to actually pinpoint where an item was meant to be sold; this page is trying to make the distinction between Belgian, Canadian and any other European products (with or without French text) from France-only product.

And wowee!  Some French Jem TV Commercials!  Thanks Isabelle, again!

1986: DollsI have seen most of the first year dolls in French packaging on eBay and through various sellers, I believe all 8 of them were available in French packaging.  For more information on the differences between 1st year doll packages, go here.

Boxes are written primarily in French, with some English (song titles, etc)
Front of Box
1. Doll's name: Depending on the doll, reads: "______ du groupe Holograms" or Misfits.  Rio & Jem/Jerrica remain the same as US boxes.
2. Cassette Tape Information: Song titles remain in English, the rest of the writing is in French.
3. Hasbro Logo: the same as the US.
4. Truly Outrageous Tag: below it reads "Elle rock... elle choque!" (loosely translated to "She rocks... she shocks!")
5. Stock Number: Information needed.  In 1987 they did use completely different stock numbers than the US did.
6. Audition Contest Panel, has a short description of Jem and the Holograms (nothing to do with the audition contest)
7. Licensing information/Country of manufacture: Hong Kong
8. Jemstar Points/Proof of Purchase are there.

*Thanks to Jean-Nicolas from Québec, Canada / popartmusic81 for this photo!

1986: Other Hasbro products: Presumably got the entire line. Have personally the Backstager/"Loge Rock" and the Star Stage though they possibly may have been 1987 issues (does it really matter?) It's possible France even got their own Jem fashion & playset packages, and didn't just have to share the "6 language European" packages like the rest of Europe, but I have yet to see any of these items surface.

1986: French-exclusive mail in offer: on fashion cards sold in France, there was a promotion for the Jemstar points, to recieve these tri-fold folders (outside) (inside).  They are printed in France and have the Hasbro France address on the back.  Apparently the promotion was on the 6-language cards, (maybe a sticker?) with instructions on how to phone Hasbro to order them with Jemstar points).
Talk about rare!  (Thanks so much again to Isabelle for providing the photos and information on these!)

1987: The French 1987 Hasbro catalogue lists most of the items that were released in the US,  shown below.  I have included their French, English and French Canadian names to help distinguish them.  While these items were available to French retailers, it is possible that not all the items listed actually made it to stores, due to lack of interest at the time.

Boxes are written primarily in French, with English song titles.

1. Doll's name: Depending on the doll, reads: "________ des Holograms" or "________ des Misfits".   Rock N' Curl Jem becomes Jem Rock 'n Roll, Flash N' Sizzle Jem/Jerrica becomes Jem Rock 'n Flash, Video is Vidéo, The Starlight Girls are simply, Les Starlights, Glitter N' Gold Jem & Rio are Rio & Jem Rock 'n Gold respectively.  See above table for more French-only box details.
2. Cassette Tape Information: Song titles remain in English, the rest of the writing is in French.
3. Hasbro Logo: Not sure, but likely the same as the US.
4. Truly Outrageous Tag: missing completely, replaced with a smaller font that reads "Elle est fantastique."
5. Stock Number: Different system from the US.
7. Licensing information/Country of manufacture: Hasbro S.A., BP 203, 93 153 Le Blanc Mesnil cedex. © 1986 Made in China, tape made in Hong Kong.
8. Jemstar Points/Proof of Purchase; I'm not sure if they were included on French boxes or not.

So far, Isabelle has confirmed there were French editions (not imports from Belgium or elsewhere) of Danse, Video, the Starlight Girls, Synergy, Pizzazz, Clash and Raya. For more information on the differences between 2nd year doll packages, go here

1988: France will always be a special place in Jem's world, as that is the only country where ultra-rare Rock N' Romance Jem may have been sold (still have never seen a Rock N' Romance box or doll from France though...).

Other Jem Items

Hard Cover Books Whitman/France (France got all 7 of the Golden Books)

  • Le Concours de Rock (French version of Golden Hardcover "Battle of the Bands")
  • La nuit aux mille etoiles (French version of Golden Hardcover "Night of a Thousand Earrings")
  • Le Gala des Misfits (French version of Golden Hardcover "Spoils of Success"

  • Soft Cover Books Whitman/France

  • La fête des Hologrammes (French version of "Suprise at Starlight Mansion")
  • Le Secret De Jerrica (French version of "Secret Star")
  • Tournage en Afrique (French version of "Video Mischief")
  • Mystère de la voie lactée (French version of "Dance Club Magic")
  •
Book and Tape sets (we know of one for sure, there were almost positively more)

"Jem, star des Hologrammes"; text by M. Ibelin, directed by A. Bidont. CBS Records, 1987. It came with a mini-poster, featuring a full-color illustration of Jem wearing white lacey gloves, mouth wide open.  The tape came on a card illustrated with a cute picture of Jem happily jumping in the air.  Besides some of the names being mispronounced and facts being a little skewed (evidently becoming Jem wasn't really a choice for Jerrica in this version of "The Beginning" story) it's relatively faithful to the US version.
Comic Books (reprints from the UK comic books.1987, Whitman Bandes dessinées, 32 pages).  They are soft covered (like the Whitman soft covers) with higher quality paper than the UK comics.  So far I know of two, and the telepoche series that have reprinted the UK comics.  It is possible more of the French comics exist additional to those listed here.
    • Le Trésor Des Pharaons This issue contains the stories "Le trésor des pharaons," "La déesse Diane," "Quiproquo a Capri," & "High"
    • Rock Parade has four stories: "Rock Parade" (Big Top Pop, in the UK comics), "La maison hantée" (The House of Fear, in the UK comics), "Qui est qui" (a story similar to "One Jem Too Many, but didn't appear in the UK comics) and  . (Thanks to Wendy for the photo and Isabelle for the info)
Télé poche (offered each week, for months, starting in 1987 a Jem comic book page (reprints/translations of the UK comics).  Here is a translation of the introduction to the debut comic: "Starting this week "Poche junior" offers you exclusively, new comic book adventures of Jem, rock n roll star. The heroine who got a beautiful success last winter on TF1. Hurry to page VI ... action, charm, spangles, what a world than the one of show business! A world that you'll find again soon on TV, in new episodes of the famous rock cartoon. Jem will be the great star of fall."  It is apparent that these comics were printed here before they were compiled into the comic books above.
    • A sample of some of these pages.
Puzzles (presumably all the ones the UK got, except with French text and licensed by MB France).

    Audio

  • Various Cartoon theme compilations, such as Les Heros De La Tele , La Fête Des Enfants ,Hit Parade Des Enfants, Salut Les Zappeurs.
  • 45 RPM single of the Jem theme (in French, I presume)

  • Video
: in VHS Secam format (will not play on standard North American VCRs).  Thanks!

"Club Dorothée is the name of THE show in France where they air all the cartoons. the main host's name was Dorothée, hence the name. Club Dorothée was HUGE for over a decade, and is still remembered by fans. Dorothée showed up on a show last year, and it was a hit. Back then, when they were on the air, during the holidays, I guess they had +50 hours of air time. Dorothée was famous to have gone in Japan and in the states to find new cartoons like Dragon Ball, Ken, and so many more, including Jem. Dorothée was also a singer, she and her friends sung many French credit titles (Dragon ball Z, Bioman...)  Dorothée already had success hosting a kid program, before getting her own show.  Club Dorothée was huge for the kids in those days, imagine a Oprah for the kids. ;)"
