Please
note: this page is almost entirely the contributions of Isabelle Ronc,
(photos, text, translations!) except where noted, so thanks so much to
her for helping me compile as much information on this section as I have,
it would be about two sentences long if not for her. Comme Jem, Isabelle
est fantastique aussi, et merci beaucoup!

| Hasbro's Toyline France must have been a big market for
Jem, as they got nearly all that Hasbro sold in the US. Of course,
in Europe things are imported and exported across the borders continuously
so it's difficult to actually pinpoint where an item was meant to be sold;
this page is trying to make the distinction between Belgian, Canadian and
any other European products (with or without French text) from France-only
product.
And wowee! Some French Jem TV Commercials! Thanks Isabelle, again! 1986: Dolls: I
have seen most of the first year dolls in French packaging on eBay and
through various sellers, I believe all 8 of them were available in French
packaging. For more information on the differences
between 1st year doll packages, go here.
1986: Other Hasbro products: Presumably got the entire line. Have personally the Backstager/"Loge Rock" and the Star Stage though they possibly may have been 1987 issues (does it really matter?) It's possible France even got their own Jem fashion & playset packages, and didn't just have to share the "6 language European" packages like the rest of Europe, but I have yet to see any of these items surface. 1986: French-exclusive
mail in offer: on fashion cards sold in France, there was a promotion
for the Jemstar points, to recieve these tri-fold folders (outside)
(inside). They are printed in France
and have the Hasbro France address on the back. Apparently the promotion
was on the 6-language cards, (maybe a sticker?) with instructions on how
to phone Hasbro to order them with Jemstar points).

| 1988: France will always be a special
place in Jem's world, as that is the only country where ultra-rare Rock
N' Romance Jem may have been sold (still have never seen a Rock N'
Romance box or doll from France though...).

Hard Cover Books
Whitman/France (France
got all 7 of the Golden Books)
Book and Tape sets (we know of one for sure, there were almost positively more) "Jem, star des
Hologrammes"; text by M. Ibelin, directed by A. Bidont. CBS Records,
1987. It came with a mini-poster, featuring a full-color illustration of
Jem wearing white lacey gloves, mouth wide open. The tape came on
a card illustrated with a cute picture of Jem happily jumping in the air.
Besides some of the names being mispronounced and facts being a little
skewed (evidently becoming Jem wasn't really a choice for Jerrica in this
version of "The Beginning" story) it's relatively faithful to the US version.
Comic Books (reprints
from the UK comic books.1987,
Whitman Bandes dessinées, 32 pages). They are soft covered
(like the Whitman soft covers) with higher quality paper than the UK comics.
So far I know of two, and the telepoche series that have reprinted the
UK comics. It is possible more of the French comics exist additional
to those listed here.
Audio Video: in VHS Secam format (will not play on standard North American VCRs). Thanks!
Video:
in DVD format: Looks like the French got the same treatment as the US and
elsewhere... in that only the first 2/3rds of the run are out on DVD.
Argh! For more DVD information (episode titles, voice credits, etc,
go here.)

Miscellaneous Fun French Stuff! (Screen
captures are from Sven Ken, thanks!)
"Club Dorothée is the name of THE show in France where they air all the cartoons. the main host's name was Dorothée, hence the name. Club Dorothée was HUGE for over a decade, and is still remembered by fans. Dorothée showed up on a show last year, and it was a hit. Back then, when they were on the air, during the holidays, I guess they had +50 hours of air time. Dorothée was famous to have gone in Japan and in the states to find new cartoons like Dragon Ball, Ken, and so many more, including Jem. Dorothée was also a singer, she and her friends sung many French credit titles (Dragon ball Z, Bioman...) Dorothée already had success hosting a kid program, before getting her own show. Club Dorothée was huge for the kids in those days, imagine a Oprah for the kids. ;)" |
