There is a rarer Caucasian/paler skinned Glitter
'n Gold Rio as well. See a picture of
them together.
There is a Glitter 'n Gold
Rio with longer (like original Rio's) purple hair. (thanks Marilyn
for this photo!)
The lip paint can vary from a pink shade that matches
his skin to a much lighter/paler shade.

One of the least popular Jem dolls.
These dolls tend to get "greasy" in the face.
Wipe it off, if you have it on your dolls, as it could be the early signs
of the vinyl deteriorating (if left alone it may cause spots/freckling).
I used to write that he was Hispanic, now I'm not
so sure, given that Christy Marx
has not defined him as such; "I never specified an ethnicity for Rio, and
he certainly was NOT set out as Puerto Rican. If anything, he might
have some Hispanic blood a couple generations back mixed with who-knows-what."

TrulyOutrageousJem,
digest # 2121) Which doesn't necessarily mean the *doll* isn't Hispanic...
but you gotta wonder about that tan if he's not!

The back box always says what is contained with
the doll. The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves
stated came with the doll;
Contains; 12 1/2" Glitter 'n Gold Rio doll,
Rio "glitter" outfit, flower for JEM, sneakers, hairpick, "gold" sunglasses,
cassette tape and figure stand. |
