Jem Sunglasses ID Page

Probably the most difficult items for collectors to track down today- they are tiny, breakable and came with the rarest fashions, the Flip Side fashions.  Thankfully though, there are some (relatively) easy to find glasses that came with the three Jem/Jerrica dolls, Rio's Rappin' fashion (as well as some Rio dolls), and the Show Me the Way playset, so there is no reason for your myopic Jem dolls to suffer!

Square Shaped
Came with the Flip Side Fashions and the dolls Glitter 'n Gold Jem/Jerrica & Flash 'n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica .
Rounded/Triangular
There are three styles that differ slightly.  I can't say with certainty but they appear to follow this pattern:
  • Flip-side fashion /Jerrica glasses with the wider nose notch and sharper angles, associated with fashion boxes marked H-44 on the backs.
  • Flip-side fashion /Jerrica glasses which have a much narrower/triangular nose notch, usually paler colouring, associated with fashion boxes marked H-22 on the backs.
  • I believe are 1st Edition Rio glasses, they are the same shape as the Glitter 'n Gold Rio glasses.  Only some 1st Edition Rio's came with glasses, and unfortunately I don't have one so I can't tell you for sure if these are his.
Show Me The Way
I always thought it was some strange sense of humour that drove Hasbro to put a pair of glasses a set called "Show me the way".  These are unique to this set, and there are no other Jem items with these strangely shaped glasses.
Unfortunately, due to their rarity, I am missing some photos and this guide isn't complete.  As well, I wasn't told how to differentiate the pairs from each other in some cases, so you'll just have to look at the pics yourself and try to figure out what you have.  In most cases, if you have Jem glasses, they probably belong to one of the dolls as they are much more common than those from the Flip Side fashions.  One day I hope to have this guide more complete.  Until then, any knowledge or pics you can share is welcome!

Square Shaped Glasses

Opaque shiny gold: Glitter 'n Gold Jem/Jerrica.
Raspberry Pink: Flash 'n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica.
Reddish pink: Putting It All Together.
Violet/Pink: Broadway Magic.
Pale Purple/Lilac: She Makes An Impression.
Aqua Blue: Runnin' Like the Wind & Lightnin' Strikes.
Yellow: We Can Change It

Rounded/Triangular Glasses

The Purples:  Came with City LightsRappin', and possibly some 1st Edition Rio dolls.

I have seen in 3 styles;
  • the most rounded belonging to the Rio Fashion Rappin', and possibly some 1st Edition Rio dolls.
  • The most angular pair belonging to City Lights (H22 marked box)
  • The pair with the widest nose notch also came from City Lights, I am guessing from an H44 marked box.
The aqua blues: Came with 1st Edition Jem/Jerrica, Sophisticated Lady & Rock Country.*

All various shades seen left, the Jem/Jerrica glasses being the palest blue of the four shades (of shades, haha).  I've found that the more triangular nose ones come with the Hong Kong marked dolls, and the wider-nosed ones with those Made in China - but since I obviously haven't seen every single Jem doll made, I can't say if this is a rule or not.  I haven't yet owned an H22 box Sophisticated Lady, but I would guess it would come with the more triangular nose notch in approximately the same shade.

*I have heard of at least one Like A Dream fashion coming with blue glasses too.
Jem/Jerrica glasses, International: The Mexican-made Jerrica glasses are quite pale blue and the nose area is triangular, it's a bit wider than the usual Jem triangular-shaped glasses & they seem to be specific to a Mexican-made doll.  My Spanish doll's' glasses look very much like the Hong Kong Jem/Jerrica glasses.

Yellows: Came with Up & Rockin' & Let's Rock This Town.*

Up & Rockin' has much greener/fluorescent looking glasses.  Let's Rock This Town's are a truer, deeper yellow.  Presumably both fashions also came in the triangular nose-notch styles, the bottom photo is from an Up & Rockin' fashion.

*I have heard of at least one Music In The Air fashion coming with yellow glasses too.
Gold (Opaque): Came with Glitter 'n Gold Rio.

Came with Gettin' Down To Business, Like a Dream & Music in the Air.

Music In The Air is much darker than the rest, Gettin' Down To Business is paler with an orangey cast, and Like a Dream is somewhere in the middle.  The colours can vary a bit from pair to pair but they are generally identifiable to the fashions they came with.
I would guess that Like A Dream & Music In The Air are also available in the smaller/triangular nose-notched versions, like the Gettin' Down To Business pairs.  Which style of glasses you get seems to refer to the "H" number on the back of the boxes, the H-22 fashions coming with the smaller/triangular nose-notched glasses and the H-44 with the wider nose notches.

The Oddball

Yellow Assymetrical glasses: Came with the playset Show Me The Way.
Maxie (A different Hasbro doll) also had some sunglasses that are the same shape as Jem's.
