Astral on the cartoon

Known Variations/Various Comments

  • Astral was most likely never produced in any significant number. On that note, let me offer this warning: *The MIB Astral photo is branded to discourage fraudulent auctions/sellers.  I do not own this doll, this is a scan from the 1988 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair catalogue.   Anyone using my photo in order to "sell" this doll is a scam artist, so beware!*
  • She was first named "Magic".
  • Astral #1: This photo was donated by someone who worked on the Jem cartoon (who wishes to remain anonymous.) I have no doubt as to it's authenticity. Astral #2: Looks mostly like Astral #1 at left, but the coat is definitely Astral #3's.  She also comes with a Misfit bracelet. Note the long tendrils of hair on each side of her head.  She is holding her dove on one hand.  Astral #3: This is Astral as she is pictured most prominently in the 1988 Hasbro Pre-Toy Fair catalogue.  Notice the new face mold!
I have placed the dolls in what I believe is the order of production, #1 being the earliest, and #3 being the closest to the final product, had she gotten onto store shelves. My reasoning behind this is that the first 2 dolls use an older (and much used!) Jem mold, whereas the third Astral has a completely unique face mold.
Some other things you may notice that changed along the line...

  • Astral started out without earrings, but had them by doll #3.  They look like blue Rock N' Curl Jem hoops- similarly coloured ones came with some Maxie dolls/sets.
  • Astral's coat started out with gold sparkly designs, eventually morphed into a lighter chiffon-type material, which eventually got rune/magical designs printed on it.
  • It's difficult to tell, but her hair decoration looks like it changed from doll 1 to doll 3.
  • Ditto her tights- they look much darker and opaque in the end.
  • Her shoes went from an "Aja" pink colour to a darker plum, presumably to match her culottes which also darkened throughout her progress.
  • At one point, she had a Misfits gold spiked bracelet. It's difficult to tell if she is still wearing it by doll #3, it may have been an earlier method of attaching the dove to her wrist (the dove is not shown in the first photo).
