First Year Boxes

Most countries that sold Jem dolls had packaging peculiar to their own country, but with the exception of Spain and Mexico, the dolls were all made in either Hong Kong or China.
So far, these are all the different countries I've heard of with their own distinct 1st year Jem doll packaging:

USA
Canada
France
Germany
Italy
Mexico
The Netherlands
Spain
United Kingdom

Apparently Dutch and French boxes sufficed for the 1986 Belgian market.  I'm also curious about Australia and New Zealand; I've been told they just got US imported Jem items, not sure if that's totally true or not.  If you know of any international 1st year boxes not noted here, please contact me!

US 1st Year doll boxes

As Jem is an American product, I'm using the US version as the definitive version of a Jem doll/packaging.  The first 8 dolls (Jem, Aja, Kimber, Shana, Rio, Pizzazz, Roxy and Stormer) all came in rectangular boxes with a "flap". The flap on the side is embellished with large, highly realistic rendering of the doll's character.  Each box is particular to the doll that came in it.  The licensing/manufacturing information on the side panel can differ due to where the doll was made or assembled.

These are both boxes for first edition Shana.
The 4203- refers to Shana (that is her stock number), the 4005 Asst means it's the Holograms assortment -Aja, Kimber and Shana were sold in groups of six in a box - 3 Kimber, 2 Aja, and 1 Shana per carton.  Then we have the place of manufacture, and a little H32 or 22/44 etc number in the bottom right corner.  Brian has speculated that this may refer to the factory where the specific doll was produced.  Whatever the meaning, the numbers do seem to correspond with slight differences that the dolls contained therein have, such as being a "knobby wrist" body or a slightly different fabric used.  These are not differences like those between 1st Edition Kimber & 2nd Edition Kimber; these dolls are intended to be identical, but have these slight differences due to either a different factory being used or a different lot of orders being filled, for example.

Among the eight first year dolls, there are four sub categories -Jem/Jerrica, The Holograms (Aja, Kimber, Shana) The Misfits (Roxy, Pizzazz, Stormer) and Rio.  All boxes are based on the same template, but each has differences peculiar to it's subgroup.

1986 Holograms Box
Kimber, Aja and Shana, had a common illustration, the same used for "The First Year Illustrated Poster" on the back, along with text about the Jem/Jerrica triangle, etc.  Also included is a description of the box contents, stock numbers, the Hasbro logo. Lastly, there are Jemstar points, which could be redeemed for mail-in special offers.  The box flows from yellow to orange to pink, and has primarily violet writing on it.

1986 Jem/Jerrica Box
very similar to the Holograms box.  Differences are:
  • the cassette tape image is replaced by a drawing of Jem and a notation about the Jemstar earrings & Jerrica's extra fashion.
  • The back of the box has some extra text relating to her batteries (by Jerrica's leg)

  • 1986 Rio Box
Similar to Jem/Jerrica & the Holograms boxes, the back illustration and text is almost the same, except the "Fully Poseable Doll" text (under the Rockin' Roadster) has been removed. My Rio has his name written on the top, side and bottom flaps, I don't know if all Rio's do or not; I also have a Stormer with the same thing so it's not peculiar to him.

    1986 Misfits Dolls Box
Pizzazz, Stormer, and Roxy came with the Misfits Illustrated poster image on the back, also with statements like "...they'll do anything to undermine Jem and the Holograms - even sabotage their concerts!"  Also included is a description of the box contents, stock numbers, the Hasbro logo. Lastly, there are Jemstar points, which could be redeemed for mail-in special offers.  Unlike the Holograms boxes, the Misfits boxes have an extra colour- purple, on the bottom, the text being more pink on these boxes.  Only the Misfits got the extra glory of having their name banners printed on the back of their boxes as well as the front.

    US Variant ("name" boxes)

Left: Stormer "name" box, beside a Roxy non-named box.
Some flap boxes have the name of the doll printed on the side, top and bottom panel.  It doesn't seem to matter the country of origin (Hong Kong or China) but as the second year doll boxes also have the names like this, my guess is that it was a feature added to later-run issues of the dolls.  I don't know if all dolls had this variation or not; my Rio has the name so I don't know if there is a "non-named" box for him.

    US Variant ("Audition Contest" boxes)

    "Audition contest" box.
Some dolls from 1986 had a star printed on the upper right corner of the box advertising the Jem Audition Contest.  On the side of the box was the "no purchase necessary" rules.  This section is filled with other information on some European boxes; the contest did not run there.

    International Boxes

    International Differences.
As with the US, International "flap" doll boxes generally follow the same formula of the four subgroups (Jem, Rio, The Misfits & The Holograms), but this section is to find what is specifically different about an international box.

Due to language differences, the following things are often different, and so are the things to use to identify an international box.
    1. Doll's name: As far as I know in 1986, the names are kept the same everywhere.  It's the ".... of the Misfits" / "....of the Holograms" parts that are different on non-English boxes.
    2. Cassette Tape Information: The song titles are in English, the rest of the text is in the country of origin, except the Mexican and Spanish tapes, which have spanish song titles, as the songs themselves are re-dubbed in Spanish language.
    3. Hasbro (or affiliate) Logo: Appears on the side flap and back all the boxes listed here.
    4. Truly Outrageous Tag (also appears on back and side)
    5. Stock Number (also appears on back and side)  Occurs in these places in US, Canadian, Spanish and Mexican dolls; it is blank on Dutch, French, German and Italian dolls, they have their stock number on the top flap & on the back of the box.
    6. Audition Contest Panel, is missing on non-Audition contest US & Canadian dolls, is a space for other information on European dolls, it is omitted on the Mexican dolls.
    7. Manufacturer information, is usually found here, an exception being the Dutch dolls, where it is found in small print until the contents listing on the back of the box.
    8. Jemstar Points: All dolls I know of, except Mexican dolls, have Jemstar points printed on the back.

    Canadian

    Canadian Variant ("Audition Contest" boxes)

    5. Stock Number: Pizzazz is 6307, printed on the top flap & on the back under the Hasbro logo.
    6. Audition Contest Panel: Contains instructions for collecting Jemstar points and mailing them in to get a superbe poster! (anyone know what it looks like?!)
    7. Licensing information/Country of manufacture: © 1986 Hasbro S.A. under Berne & Universal Copyright Convention Fabriqué à Hong Kong
    8. Jemstar Points/Proof of Purchase are there and can be used to get a Jem poster, I don't know what it looks like, but for 6 points, I'd hope it's pretty nice - the MTV jacket was obtainable with 1 point in the US/Canada!

    Dutch

See the numbered example box above to understand the numbering system described here.

Boxes are written primarily in Dutch, with some English (song titles, etc).  As so I (and other collector's I've spoken too) haven't yet seen 1st-Year Belgian box, it's reasonable to guess that these Dutch-only boxes sufficed for the Belgian market as well.

    1. Doll's name: Depending on the doll, reads: "________ van de Holograms/Misfits".  It is important to distinguish this from "von der Holograms/Misfits, as those are German boxes.
    2. Cassette Tape Information: Song titles remain in English, the rest of the writing is in Dutch.
    3. Hasbro Logo: the same as the US.
    4. Truly Outrageous Tag: remains the same as the US, no difference.

    8. Jemstar Points/Proof of Purchase; are there but with no explanation as to what they are on the box.

    3. Hasbro Logo: the same as the US.
    4. Truly Outrageous Tag: same as US
    5. Stock Number: 6000's European system, shown on top flap and under Jem star points on the back.
    6. Audition Contest Panel: I don't understand Dutch, but it looks like a brief description of Jem and Jerrica's dual personality.
    7. Licensing information/Country of manufacture: side panel area is blank.  The licensing information instead is found under the contents listing on the back.  "© 1986 Hasbro een divisie van MB International BV - Utrecht/Brussel under Berne & Universal Copyright Convention."  The Brussels mention makes me think these same dolls were sold in Belgium; in fact this specific doll was purchased in Belgium.
    8. Jemstar Points/Proof of Purchase; are present.
Other: like the US box, Jem/Jerrica boxes have some additional text on the back, relating to her batteries (by Jerrica's leg in the drawing).

    5. Stock Number: Different from the US, not shown on the side panel.
