1st Edition Kimber
#4202/4005 Asst.

Description: Caucasian doll with long bright red fuschia hair, spiky on top.  Nude, she can be differentiated from her second edition by lack of earrings or earring holes (and usually lighter make-up).

Known Variations Comments and Fun Facts
  • First edition Kimber is usually found with the darker make up (shown left), but lighter make up is also possible, as well as a happy medium between the two (see photo) Thanks to Pete for the photo of the "dark to pale" make up scale.
  • Most dolls have assymetrical hair cuts (one side longer than the other)
  • She can also be found with a "side part", simply the hair being sewn in at an angle.
  • If your Kimber is just a little different from this one, maybe you have a Mexican Kimber, or a Spanish Kimber
  • Her face is pretty similar to the Kenner "Darci" line doll Dana; it is the same mold as fellow Jem dolls Roxy and Video. (Thanks to Matt & Rick ("BATGIRL") for the face mold info!)
  • Kimber was the guitar player, in the beginning concept of Jem.
  • The "M" shape on the end of her keyboard is apparently in reference to Jem's first name, simply "M".
  • Compare 1st Edition Kimber prototype photos, box art, cartoon form, comic book form and many other incarnations.
  • The back box always says what is contained with the doll.  The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves stated came with the doll;
Contains; 12 1/2" doll with stage fashion, musical instrument, pumps, hairpick, cassette tape and figure stand.

    stage fashion
White velveteen tuxedo jacket with light blue lamé lapels, dark pink ruffled inner lapels and cuffs.  Closes with a plastic snap in the front.

  • There is a variant of this jacket, with the red being replaced with silver, the blue is also paler. (thanks to Taffeta for this photo!)
  • Her second edition jacket is basically a variation of this one.
  • Pants; harem style, light blue lamé, match lapels on her jacket.  Velcro and plastic snap closure in the back.

  • Her second edition pants are basically a variation of these.
  • There is a paler blue pair of pants that came with the silver UK jacket.
  • Socks; white closed toe fishnet.
  • They are the same material as the stockings from "Gettin' Down to Business"
  • The 1st year Jem press photos show her with plain white unpatterned socks ("matte tights" material, it looks like).
  • At least one doll from Australia came with light pink socks (Thanks Lucy for the info)
  • Taffeta has a variant (see pic)- sock on the left came from a loose nr complete Kimber in the UK (one with superstar style wrists, dark makeup) and sock on the right came from an American kimber.
  • musical instrument; Hand-held mauve keyboard with sparkly violet keys and silver strap.

  • Jem was originally supposed to be named "M", the styled "M" on the handle was made before they changed her name.  Her second edition instrument is of the same mould but with clear sparkly plastic.
  • pumps; Flourescent Pink straight cut. This is the colour typical of US packaged dolls.
  • Non-US dolls (apparently everywhere but the US) usually came with a dusty pink colour instead. Thanks to Antipathy for the scan, and MANY international collectors for helping to figure this out!
  • At least one person got this doll with shoes in the style and colour as Stormer's. (thanks Alex for the info!)
  • a Canadian version came with more "crimson" shaded shoes. (thanks Krista Shepley!)
  • Hairpick; apparently the same colour as her shoes.
Cassette Tape; white with pink lettering.  Says Kimber- "JEM Theme, Only the Beginning, and Twillight in Paris."
figure stand.  Dark pink and clear first year stand.
The exact same stand came with the 1st editions of: Jem, Aja, Kimber& Shana.
    NRFB US edition.
