1st Edition Jem/Jerrica
#4000
Description: Caucasian non-smiling doll with long platinum blonde hair, with a streak of longer cotton candy pink hair in the middle. It was made so you could tuck the pink hair under the beret in order for her to be "Jerrica".
Known Variations Comments and Fun Facts
  • This Jem usually came with bulb earrings, but can be found with star capped ones, go to the "Star-Capped 1st Ed. Jem/Jerrica ID page" to see the differences.
  • There is a Mexican version of her, who is quite different from the Hong Kong or China made dolls.
  • There is a Spanish version of her, who is not terribly different from the Hong Kong or China made dolls.
  • There is a Jerrica with a "side-part"- where the hair does not part straight down the middle (this is usually just the hair being sewn in a bit off) Thanks Dennis for this tidbit!
  • Taffeta has this doll with the Kimber face mold (there is a slight difference, to me the upper lip is the easiest way to tell them apart)
  • There were a few slight make up variations of this doll, see a pic of a Hong Kong (left) and a star-capped China (right) to see for yourself (notice the eye shadow) Thanks Dale for this pic!
  • Face mold is unique to this doll, though looks a lot like the Kimber/Roxy/Video mold.
  • She was criticized by some as having an "ugly" face, since she's not smiling openly.  For that reason, it's my favourite Jem/Jerrica doll! (we sure don't need more toothy grinned dolls)
  • The pink in her hair often fades to white, so keep your Jem out of direct sunlight or she'll only be boring old Jerrica for the rest of her days :( The moral: A Jem with no pink hair is faded, it's not a variation.  It's actually getting quite common.

  • Compare Jem/Jerrica prototype photos, box art, cartoon form, comic book form and many other incarnations.
  • Jem was originally named "M", and Jerrica Misty, then Morgan.  It was changed when Hasbro discovered they couldn't copyright a letter.
  • The back box always says what is contained with the doll.  The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves stated came with the doll;
Contains; 12 1/2" Jem/Jerrica doll, microphone, stage dress, tights, glitter shoes, hairpick, bracelet, reversible belt, daytime dress, hat, pumps, sunglasses, figure stand.
Switch plate is usually rectangular, but my MIB doll came with the "second year" switchplate back, oddly.  Folded piece of cardboard keeps switch in off position.
Button Batteries; The now obsolete A-76.
  • I've found laser pointer batteries work in her, I've been told that they are safe to use in her, as they replace A-76s.  Secondly, occasionally batteries leak.  You may be well advised to rip into that NRFB Jem doll and take them out.  A carefully opened box is less of a problem than battery acid all over the clothes if future value is your concern.
  • microphone; Standard hand-held Jem Mic.  There are variations-
#1 a slightly darker, horizontally patterned head (looking at area below the ring), and
#2 a lighter coloured checker-board pattern (looking at area below the ring)
(mine came with the #2 mic)

  • See a close up of the heads' differences (Thanks to Pete B. for this information, and the photos!)
  • To see the differences between these mics and the other Jem mics, check out the Jem Instruments page.

  •
stage dress; pink lamé minidress, has diagonally cut hem, slit on one side, 3/4 length sleeves.   A very common dress to find loose yet not quite as common as her "daytime dress" though...

  • They can range in colour from pale pink to a darker pink, the texture also changes from soft to more coarse lamé (the darker pinks tending to be more coarse)
  • tights; white waffle-weave with iridescent tinsel threads, elasticized waist. A similar material was used on 1st edition Shana's Hairbow.
glitter shoes; Chrome Pink straight edged pumps. Silver insides.
hairpick; white with a purple iridescent sheen to it.  I believe this Jem doll is the only one to have come with this comb colour.
bracelet; silver plastic cuff bracelet, has a jagged edge but not a zig-zag pattern.  I've seen ones with small stones and others with larger stones.  (the smaller stone is shown here)  I've seen the stones in colours from bright pink, clear to nearly yellow.  I'm not sure, but I suspect fading may be the culprit.
  • Flash N' Sizzle Jem's bracelet is the same mold but done in fluorescent yellow with a silver stone.
  • Damian's "audition contest" doll's bracelet had a large clear stone in lieu of a pink one.
  • reversible belt; Silver on one side; has a clear sticker with blue accents.  It  is diagonally cut with an inch long white fringe at the bottom.  The other side is white.
daytime dress; Plain white T-shirt cotton with blue vertical pinstripes. The hems and arm holes are rough, not finished and tend to fray.  The stripes are sort of wiggly- they are not completely straight.

  • These dresses and hats do vary slightly between Euro and starcapped Jerrica dress which is "a slightly different shade of blue, more aqua, and the dress itself is wider and shorter. The hats got cut off in the picture, but the hat is much larger. The Jem dress that goes with it is also bigger, and comes with the bigger bracelet.
  • hat; matches white/blue dress, has an aqua elastic band.
pumps; aqua blue straight edged pumps.
    Sunglasses; light blue, smaller style.
  • They are paler blue than those from Rock Country & Sophisticated Lady
  • See a photo of all the similar blue glasses together.
  • There are two slightly different shapes of this style of glasses.  1st Ed. Jem/Jerrica can come with either (shown left is the "triangular nose" pair, above is the "wider nose" pair.  They are slightly different hues.
  • figure stand; clear fluorescent pink (not milky at all). The Jem logo is embossed on the underside.
This stand came with the 1st editions of: Jem, Aja, Kimber & Shana

  • Shalan has written to tell me her 1st ed. Jem stand is a bit lighter pink than the rest of the Holograms' stands.  I haven't checked mine personally though.

  • Very early prototype of Jem/Jerrica (originally named M/Misty).  From Moggygoddess' photos.
  • Completely different doll style and fashion.  Make up and hair remain largely the same.
  • Jem and Jem/Jerrica in the 1986 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue
  • Differences I noticed are: The microphone is pure pink, the bracelet's jewel is small and clear (some dolls did come with this), the stripes on Jerrica's dress are darker and more uniform (not "squiggly looking" like the produced dress's), her sunglasses also look darker to me.  The doll herself seems to have much darker makeup, particularly the lip colour.
  • Jem (& Jem & the Holograms) in the 1986 German Leaflet
  • Jem & Jerrica (page 2) in the 1986 Belgium catalogue. Thanks to sven-ken of the Titi-chan forum for donating the scans!
    • Notice the Jem version is wearing the glasses, not Jerrica.
  • Jem in Topolino Magazine (Issue 1622 December 28, 1986)
  • Jem & Jerrica on the cartoon
  • 1st Edition Jem/Jerrica in various television commercials (Youtube Links)
  • The preview commercial appears to feature the doll from the 1986 Toy Fair catalogue (unpainted microphone).  The introduction commercial still shows a doll with much darker make up than the produced doll had, but the Jerrica outfit appears to be the correct aqua shade (not dark blue).
