1st Edition Aja
#4201/4005

Description: Caucasian-tone doll with long straight aqua hair, cut in two layers.  Oriental features.   Nude, she can most easily be differentiated from her second edition by lack of earring holes or earrings.

Known Variations Comments and Fun Facts
  • A loose Aja doll with white eye shadow is most likely a Super Stars doll. See a picture of them side by side to tell the difference. (thanks Thumper for that scan)
  • Aja dolls with very shiny bodies and no copyright marks is probably a Mexican Aja doll.
  • Aja is the only Jem doll with this face mold.  Looks similar to Darci's face mold.
  • See an early prototype of Aja's head mold- what a difference!
  • Aja was originally named Jade, and played keyboards.
  • Compare 1st Edition Aja prototype photos, box art, cartoon form, comic book form and many other incarnations.
  • The back of the box always says what is contained with the doll.  The bold words in my descriptions are what Hasbro themselves stated came with the doll;
Contains; 12 1/2" doll with stage fashion, musical instrument, pumps, hairpick, cassette tape and figure stand.

    stage fashion
Shirt: Colour can range from blue-mauve to pink-mauve lamé, elasticized sides, 3/4 length sleeves, 2 velcro closures in back.

  • Mexican Aja's version of this shirt is made of a plasticy-covered "pleather" type material
  • Ann has told me about a longer/bigger version of this shirt- I can't really explain it!
  • Skirt: Vinyl-like snakeskin patterned, mauve and blue mini with slit in the front.  Velcro closure in back.
  • Jeff has seen Aja's skirt with "the same pattern, except the blue "scales" we're a jumbo print, (unlike the regular,  that fades from tiny scales to bigger ones), the skirt was made from the same"plastic-y" material as Shana's 1st ed dress, & the slit & skirt were longer."
  • A pure black one is possibly Mexican Aja's (I have yet to see NRFB)
  • There is a Rose Petal Place doll that came with an outfit made of the same material
  • Belt: light pink double-strand of sequins, velcro closure.
  • Krista Shepley says her Canadian doll's belt was made of royal purple sequins.

  • Tights: Very closed weave & almost completely made of multi-coloured glittery threads, elasticized waist. She has the only tights of this type.

  • One of Hasbro's "Moon Dreamers" dolls also came with tights made of this fabric.
  • musical instrument; Light aqua blue guitar with three tuning pegs, aqua glitter decal on  front, silver cord.
  • Aja's second edition instrument is clear blue with sparkles.
  • Mexican Aja's is dark purple with sparkles.
  • pumps: pale lavender pink straight edged pumps.

  • The only doll with this colour.  1st Edition Shana's are a bit darker.

  • hairpick; Magenta (sort of translucent)

  • Compare to other Jem hair picks.
  • cassette tape; white with pink lettering. Dated 1985.  Long Jem theme & song versions, instrumental side has instruments playing the vocal track.
Side A "Aja- Jem Theme, Like a Dream, and  She's Got the Power."
Side B "Aja - Jem Instrumental"
figure stand.  Dark pink and clear first year stand. The Jem logo is embossed on the underside.

  • Her outfit looks really strange to me, no belt, weird colours- and she's missing her stage make up as well.
